Angelina Jolie (originally Angelina
Jolie Voight) is an American actress and director best known for her sex
appeal, edginess and work in the field of humanitarian aid. Jolie is the
daughter of actor Jon Voight, was raised in New York. After her early years,
she moved to Los Angeles, where she was the mental patient in Girl, interrupted
(1999). She was a student at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute for
two years and then enrolled at Beverly Hills High School. New York University
later taught her drama. She also performed in theater productions, and was a
model for music videos. It was during Hackers (1995) when Jolie was introduced
to Jonny Lee Miller, a British actor (married 1997; divorced 1999). Similar to
several other films, this one did not find an audience. Jolie was the
segregationist spouse of Alabama's governor, attracting plenty of attention in
1997. The actress later won a Golden Globe Award. Jolie played an actress who
is struggling with addiction to drugs in the HBO movie Gia in 1999. This role
earned her numerous awards including a Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors
Guild Award. In 1999, she was a part of the comedy Pushing Tin with John Cusack
and Billy Bob Thornton, and the following year , she was married to Billy Bob
Thornton (divorced 2003).After the Oscar-winning performance in Girl,
Interrupted, Jolie played a variety of action films. In Gone in Sixty Seconds
((2000)) she played Nicole Cage's lover. Later, she took on the British accent,
learned the art of street fighting and kickboxing, and was able to play the
roles in Lara Croft Tomb Raider (2003) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider : The Cradle
of Life (2004). She portrayed Alexander's mother in Oliver Stone's Alexander
(2004) and starred alongside Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow in Sky Captain and
The World of Tomorrow (a sci-fi thriller set 1930s New York City). Both films
were box office disappointments However, Jolie had a smash in Mr. &
Mrs. Smith (2005) which was a film in which she portrayed an assassin
pretending to be a normal housewife; while working on the film she came across
Brad Pitt, who became her partner.
